Brisbane is Australia's third largest city after Sydney and Melbourne with a population of 1.77 million people. The city is set along the Brisbane River, which separates North side from South. Roma Street Station is the transit hub of the city and where a lot of travellers end up. The Queen Street Mall, which is the retail heart of the city, is about a five minute stroll from the transit centre.

There are an abundance of shops, cinemas, eateries and pubs all within the city area. Some of the best places, including places to drink are located on second levels so don't be afraid to climb up some stairs. Fortitude Valley better known as "The Valley" is a kind of trendy or alternate part in town with bars, dance clubs, live music, gay clubs as well as an assortment of cafes and restaurants. At night the area can take on a bit of a seedy persona so caution should be used if walking around alone. China Town is also located in this part of town.

South Bank's parkland's are just over the Victoria Bridge and are a popular feature. There is a man made beach that is very popular over summer. See things to do.

Transport

Air
Brisbane International and Domestic Airport (www.bne.com.au) is located about 17km northwest of the city. It is serviced by many international airlines with three domestic carriers, Qantas (www.qantas.com.au), Jet Star (www.jetstar.com) the budget arm of Qantas and Virgin Blue (www.virginblue.com.au). All regularly arrive and depart for all major centres throughout Australia.

Train
Transport to the City is easiest by Airtrain (www.airtrain.com.au) which takes about 20 minutes to reach Brisbane's Roma Street Transit Centre and departs from both the domestic and international terminals for a cost of about $12. The train also provides a service to the Gold Coast, adding about 1 hour to the trip for about $23. For up to date pricing visit their website.

Taxis
Located in front of the Domestic Terminal on level 2 of the international terminal a fare to Brisbane Central Business District (CBD) from the airport is about $33 depending on route taken, traffic conditions and more, plus a $2 fee for departing taxis . You can get fare information from online Taxi Booking calculators with Black and White Cabs (www.blackandwhitecabs.com.au) and Yellow Cabs (www.yellowcab.com.au).
