Katherine
Katherine is located a three hour drive south of Darwin on the Katherine River and is the third largest town in the Northern Territory with a population of about 11,000. Katherine is often described as the place where 'the outback meets the tropics'.
Attractions around the town include the old railway station, the small Katherine Museum in the old airport terminal building, and the beautiful Springvale Homestead nearby. The homestead claims to be the oldest cattle station in the Northern Territory and provides a meaningful insight into the early pioneering days.
Katherine is ideally positioned between three areas of outstanding beauty and environmental significance, it offers the perfect base for exploring the Gulf region, the southern part of Kakadu and of course, Nitmiluk National Park. This national park is one of the most spectacular features of the Katherine area and includes the Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk) where it is possible to take a cruise along the river or walk to Edith Falls.
