Darwin
Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory and located on the coast. The Stuart Highway ends or starts here depending on which way you are going. It has all the mod cons of a major city despite its isolation, including cinema, bars, live music, casino, good shopping and eating. The best time to visit is June to July when the weather is dry. Darwin offers a lot to do including barramundi fishing, scuba diving and numerous bush walks.
The Northern Territory has some of the most unspoilt National Praks in Asutralia including Kakadu, Litchfield National Park, Katherine George and the Devils Marbles.
A feature of Kakadu National Park is that Aboriginal people have occupied the landscape continuously for at least 50,000 years. Evidence that humans have lived in the area is found throughout the park, particularly in the Aboriginal art and archaeological sites. The natural and cultural heritage of the park has been recognised with a World Heritage Listing.
Litchfield National Park features numerous waterfalls which cascade from a sandstone plateau called the Tabletop Range, magnetic termite mounds, historical sites, and the weathered sandstone pillars of the Lost City.
Katerine George features include spectacular dissected sandstone country, broad valleys and numerous, significant cultural sites. The deep gorge carved through sandstone by the Katherine River is the central attraction of the Park.
The Devils Marbles are a collection of gigantic rounded granite boulders, many of which are precariously balanced on top of one another. Scattered heaps of these 'marbles' occur across a wide, shallow valley.
Permits
Permits are needed when entering Aboriginal land in the Northern Territory however most tour operators have these permits organised. Some general information on permits is located at Central Land Council (Northern Territory) web site.
