Nestled at the northern end of the Sunshine Coast, Noosa combines the natural charm of seaside getaways with casual sophistication. This blend of spectacular ocean beaches, National Parks and delicate ecosystems is combined with the comforts of contemporary living. It’s this unique mix that gives Noosa the enviable lifestyle qualities that underpin its reputation as Australia’s finest resort village. In fact, the whole shire is declared a fauna and flora sanctuary but when you do step off the ‘beaten track’ you’ll find much to delight you.

Noosa National Park

Noosa National Park is one of Australia’s most popular nature reserves. The park comprises 477 hectares of native forests and high cliffs opening onto panoramic landscapes. Noosa National Park cradles the picture-perfect and ever-popular Main Beach whose pristine waters are swimmable every day of the year. Laguna Lookout, at the summit of Noosa National Park looks out on to the tranquil blue waters of Laguna Bay sparkling away into the distance. The park is a well known flora and fauna sanctuary with koala sightings a common treat for visitors.

Dining & Shopping

Noosa’s famous ‘Eat Street’ – Hastings Street – with its lively mix of fashionable boutiques, restaurants and beachfront accommodation expresses the essence of the distinctive Noosa style. Dining at any one of the dozens of restaurants, cafes and eateries throughout Noosa is an experience to remember. For water views, try the many fine restaurants in Noosa Sound or at Tewantin’s marina. Fast becoming Hastings Street rivals for restaurant choice are the Noosa River stretch along Gympie Terrace, Noosaville, just off the riverside strip is Thomas Street or beautiful Sunshine Beach, a hub of multicultural dining. The freshest of local ingredients are harvested from the sea and local pastures, then combined to create popular, classic Noosa fare. This inventive regional ‘cuisine of the sun’ is distinctly modern and influenced by Mediterranean and Asian flavours. Noosa also has the country’s largest range of resort wear, beach wear and specialised local arts and crafts. Many delightful hours can be wiled away searching for that special gift or personal shopping indulgence.

Markets

A ‘must do’ day-trip to the hinterland reveals other treasures like little townships filled with charm and character and fabulous country pubs as well as lovely arts and crafts. Visit the Eumundi Markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays; they are renowned throughout the state for high quality handmade goods and fresh produce. Also not to be missed are the markets held every Sunday at Noosa Harbour, or the unique array of locally made treasures at the Peregian Beachside Markets held every second Sunday.

Townsville, Australia’s largest tropical city, has become the premier destination for travellers wanting to see the ‘real’ North Queensland.

This city of 150,000 people is a charming blend of old and new with modern facilities that include entertainment, pubs, clubs, restaurants and accommodation to suit all tastes.

Because it is located in the dry tropics, Townsville consistently records more than 300 sunny days each year – perfect weather to enjoy a diversity of experiences from a skydive with a beach landing, to snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef.

Attractions here include Billabong Sanctuary, where you can hold a koala or wombat and watch crocodiles feeding, Reef HQ marine life aquarium and the Museum of Tropical Queensland to name a few. Townsville’s beachfront promenade, The Strand, is lined with restaurants, cafes, accommodation and recreational facilities. On Sundays, the Cotters Market in Flinders Mall is North Queensland’s largest arts and craft market where you can buy everything from hand-made pottery and jewellery to fresh fruits and Islander crafts.

Definitely the best hostel I’ve stayed at in Australia so far. It was very clean and everyone was super friendly. It’s fairly laid back (no partying at night), but I really enjoyed that. It was a perfect place to chill out, relax and hang out with awesome people from around the world. It’s located directly behind the mall in Cairns, and it’s only a 5 minute walk through the mall to the city center on the other side for shops and cafes.

Review

Katrina (from Australia), May 2009:
Not surprising that there are so many glowing reviews for Freeman Lodge. I spent 5 nights and it now has a special place in my heart. Managers Bob and Christine clearly work very hard to maintain a scrupulously tidy, clean and well managed hostel. Their kindness and generosity of spirit are a rarity today. Keith the resident feline is a lovely addition to the very comfortable and homely communal areas. The little extra luxuries such as hair dryer are a bonus. Location is fantastic.

The Miami Hotel is very clean. The furniture in the rooms seems very nice, the room size is big and you have a seperate little room just for luggage storage. You find a telephone, fridge and tea and coffee in your room! You also get a free drop-off and pick-up for the skybus. We would recommend everyone to stay there because it is a good value for money. Unfortunately the Internet is not free, they charge you a lot!

Review

Base St. Kilda is a great sociable hostel. The staff are super friendly and go out of their way to ensure you have a happy and pleasant stay. There are different activities organised at the bar each night, free bbq on Wednesdays is a godsend and home cooked curry night for only $6 on Thursday is a great idea too. The location is secure and modern, close to all ammenities and only a short and inexpensive tram ride to the centre. The dorms are ultra quiet; stay here with confidence.

If you are looking for hostels in Perth we have compiled a top 5 list which should help out if you are trying to organise bookings prior to getting there. Rather than us putting great blurbs written by the hostel we sourced feedback from travellers who have stayed in Perth Hostels. We have listed them in order from the top listing onwards. Read the comments because some hostels which rate highly may not suit you and your needs e.g. This is a great hostel if you want to get some sleep. Obviously not a party hostel so would not suit the party animals.

This is a list of Perth Hostels with pricing and booking options, read on for reviews.

Reasons to stay at OBB: 1. You are under 21 2. You REALLY miss dorm life at a party school 3. You have come solely for the beach and have no interest in the rest of Perth 4. You don’t mind having an uncleaned room for a week straight 5. You enjoy being woken up every hour on the hour by drunken hall mates 6. You want to pay a LOT by hostel standards for this crappy experience

Jennifer, USA | Couple 25-30 | 03rd May 2009

the location was far from the city centre of Perth, however it was right near the beach, with 2 bars and a lovely cafe bar on the beach. the staff didn’t smile much or ask how things are going but if you asked them then they would help. the room was quirky and had alot of space. i would definatly recommend this hostel if you want a beach chill with a fun night.

debbiepalmer, England | Female 25-30 | 23rd April 2009

Excellent location as so close to the beach and good facilities. Good if you prefer beach over town as town is 45 mins away by bus.

First impressions not so good. By the end loved the place. It’s minimalist and tatty but had everything I needed, and more. The beds were okay but there was a heater, a hairdryer, a sink and lockers in our room. Bob and Christine are angels. There are booklets and maps, tea/coffee, great kitchen, extremely clean, no party animals. A laid-back shack that you end up falling for.

Backpacking in Australia is very popular. There is an abundance of hostels to choose from although they vary in style greatly from the large city hostels of Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne to the smaller tropical hostels of far northern Queensland to the working outback farmstays.

Many hostels have great facilities which include swimming pools, pool tables, BBQ, communal living areas, internet and laundry services and many have 24 hour access. Some of the larger hostels sport thier own cafe, and bars that become a backpackers melting pot after dark. If you are looking for work, some hostels even provide a job search service for backpackers.

Backpacking is usually very fluid and without strict itineraries, showing up to hostels when your arrive in town is acceptable. The only problem is that the best hostels fill up pretty quickly especially during peak times. If you don’t mind sleeping at the bus stop (not advised) perhaps take a look at the hostels at the places you are going to end up. Hostels can be booked on line saving heaps of worry about where you will sleep. Check out availably and pricing of hostels throughout Australia online.

We will also try and keep you up to date with the top hostels in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane over time so check out some of the related articles.
