Top 10 Melbourne Hostels 2009

The following are the top 10 Hostels rated by backpackers who have stayed in them.  Just keep in mind that any type of rating system is subjective and really only provides an indication. Also, if a hostel is rated highly by many it may not mean that it is everyone’s cup of tea.  Look further into the blurb and check to see if the facilities and location meet your requirements.

1. Freeman Lodge

Review

Katrina (from Australia), May 2009:
Not surprising that there are so many glowing reviews for Freeman Lodge. I spent 5 nights and it now has a special place in my heart. Managers Bob and Christine clearly work very hard to maintain a scrupulously tidy, clean and well managed hostel. Their kindness and generosity of spirit are a rarity today. Keith the resident feline is a lovely addition to the very comfortable and homely communal areas. The little extra luxuries such as hair dryer are a bonus. Location is fantastic.

4. Cooee on St Kilda

Review

The Miami Hotel is very clean. The furniture in the rooms seems very nice, the room size is big and you have a seperate little room just for luggage storage. You find a telephone, fridge and tea and coffee in your room! You also get a free drop-off and pick-up for the skybus. We would recommend everyone to stay there because it is a good value for money. Unfortunately the Internet is not free, they charge you a lot!

I have been working in the industry for a few years and have stayed at 5 star hotels and now i’m wondering why. If you want to save money and have a great time this is for you. The staff were more than helpful and looked after us extremly well. Wish i’d found it earlier!!

6. City Centre budget Hotel

Review

Perfect location, right near the hussel and bussel of the city but hotel’s noise level was still kept to a minimum. Rooms and bathrooms were clean, room included fridge and tv. Very large and comfortable bed. Would stay here again as it was also a bargin price however parking spaces are not owned by the hotel so we had to pay $20 to park from 6pm – 7am on a friday night.

Review

Maria (from Ireland), May 2009:
Well run hostel with good facilities, nice lounge area downstairs and TV and waiting area in the laundry room! Very helpful staff. Note, however, If you want to stay right in the heart of things, location wise, this hostel is in a quiet suburb and is either a long walk or a tram ride into the city centre.

8. Base St Kilda

Review

Base St. Kilda is a great sociable hostel. The staff are super friendly and go out of their way to ensure you have a happy and pleasant stay. There are different activities organised at the bar each night, free bbq on Wednesdays is a godsend and home cooked curry night for only $6 on Thursday is a great idea too. The location is secure and modern, close to all ammenities and only a short and inexpensive tram ride to the centre. The dorms are ultra quiet; stay here with confidence.
